Paseana was one of a number of good Argentine horses who successfully transitioned to North American racing under the care of Ron McAnally. A Group 1 winner in her native land, she became a two-time Eclipse Award winner in the United States and won graded stakes through the age of 8. Unfortunately, she had severe problems with infertility and managed to produce only one named foal.

Assessments
Rated at 123 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American-raced older females of 1994, 4 pounds below champion Sky Beauty.
As an individual
A bay mare, Paseana possessed good natural speed and could produce her run as her jockey asked, though she was most comfortable when stalking the pace. She was indifferent as to surface. She was retired after injuring a suspensory ligament while running fifth in the 1995 Vanity Handicap.
As a producer
Paseana only produced one named foal, the 2000 Lode filly Paseana’s Girl, who ran third once from three starts in North America before producing four foals (all by Candy Ride), of which two were winners.
Connections
Paseana was bred by Raul Lottero’s Haras Vacación. In Argentina, she raced in the colors of Caballeriza Bahia Blanca. In the United States, she was owned by Sidney and Jenny Craig, who purchased Paseana for US$320,000, and was trained by Ron McAnally. She was ridden to her Breeders’ Cup Distaff win by Chris McCarron. She was sent to reproductive specialist Dr. Ignacious Pavlosky in Argentina in 1998. After she produced Paseana’s Girl in 2000, the mare was brought back to the United States in hopes of a successful 2001 mating on Northern Hemisphere time, but she failed to ovulate and was sent back to Argentina in August 2001. She died of an internal hemorrhage in June 2006 at Haras San Ignacio de la Hoya, where she was boarded.
Pedigree notes
Paseana is inbred 4x5 to five-time American champion sire Nasrullah, also the English/Irish champion sire of 1951. She is a half sister to Paraguaya (by Country Doctor), dam of 2001/2002 South African champion 2-year-old filly Paraca (by Kitwood) and second dam of Chilean Group 2 winner Paseano and South African Group 3 winners Punta Arenas and Pomp and Power.
Paseana and Paraguaya are out of Pasiflin, who was sired by German Group 3 winner Flintham out of Las Pasiones (by Amateur, a stakes-winning son of 1960 French champion 3-year-old male Charlottesville). A half sister to multiple Argentine stakes winner Pasionario (by Mister Titi), Las Pasiones, in turn, is out of Pasionaria, by 1956 Travers Stakes winner Oh Johnny (by Johns Joy). The next dam in Paseana’s tail-female line, Holly, is by 1953 Prix Gladiateur winner Xaret out of Harp, by 1931 English champion 3-year-old male Cameronian.

Fun facts
- Paseana was Sidney Craig’s first purchase of a stakes horse; he had previously been dabbling with claimers.
- In 1995, the Craigs bought a 225-acre farm in California which they named Rancho Paseana in their champion’s honor.
- Paseana is the namesake for a Group 2 stakes race at Argentina's San Isidro race course.
